I take good care of my teeth. Why must I see the dentist twice a year?
Daily brushing and flossing are crucial to the health of your teeth and gums. Just as important, however, are the six-month visits you keep with your dentist. At Dental Care and Wellness of Sonoma County, we do more than probe teeth and gums looking for signs of decay or infection. Dr. Smida uses her trained eye as well as the latest diagnostic technologies to detect problems such as cavities, gum disease, and oral cancer as early as possible. The routine care provided by your dentist removes plaque and tartar that may have accumulated since your last cleaning, protecting your smile from disease.
What is the benefit of seeing a biological or holistic dentist?
General dental care seeks to prevent infection and disease and to treat problems in an efficient manner. The difference between a general dentist and a biological or holistic dentist is the care that is taken in early detection using minimally invasive techniques. In our office, we rely on digital x-rays, laser cavity detection, and other proven diagnostic tools. Dr. Smida, in addition to holding a dental degree, has received a degree in Integrative and Biological Medicine. Her patients are treated as individuals with consideration to what will promote a healthy smile and a healthy body. As a biological dentist, Dr. Smida never places amalgam fillings, nor metal restorations of any kind. This careful use of materials is a hallmark of a biological practice.
Why do my gums feel tender when I brush my teeth?
If your gums bleed or feel tender when you brush your teeth, they are telling you something! Tenderness, redness, soreness, and bleeding may all indicate the presence of infection. Dr. Smida offers proven periodontal therapy based on each individual's needs. Cleaning the areas between teeth and gums may remove bacteria for a short time. Adding ozone to the deep cleaning greatly improves the long-term efficacy of this treatment, as ozone kills bacteria and promotes healing of diseased tissue. Gum disease is progressive. It will not heal without proper treatment. Schedule your visit for periodontal therapy with Dr. Jurina Smida today.
Why do you use metal-free implants?
Dental implants have become the preferred method of tooth replacement. To date, no other form of care has come close to replicating natural oral anatomy. Implants, combined with a crown, bridge, or denture, are as near to natural as you can get. In many practices, this restorative treatment includes titanium implants. Titanium has been a common material used in procedures such as hip replacement, giving patients the perception that this metal is safe for use anywhere in the body.
Metal is a highly allergic substance, even titanium. The unfortunate fact is that many people do not notice their metal sensitivity until years after an implant or implants have been placed. The irritation that occurs from metal can set the stage for bone loss. Metal is also unstable, affected by temperature changes as well as the nature of the body, which may lead to electromagnetic stress.
